I is for International

Return to Index

Lions Clubs International is a truly International organisation with clubs in 210 different countries.

This network of clubs allows international aid to be delivered where it is needed whenever there is a disaster.

Lions are always one of the first organizations to provide aid but they are also there long after the media have departed working to rebuild communities hit by disaster.

What is more, because Lions pay administration costs from there own pockets, you can be sure that every penny donated to Lions is used to provide valuable service where it is needed most.

N is for New Century

Return to Index

Lions Clubs International was founded in 1917 so in 2017 we will be celebrating our first 100 years of serving our communities.

centennial_logo (1)In those years Lions have spread from Chicago to an organisation with 46,000+ clubs in 210 countries and with a growing membership of over 1.4 million we can truly say that “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion”.

Lions are celebrating their centenary, not just by looking back at the successes of the past, but also by making sure that Lions Clubs are just as relevant today as they were in 1917. Lions around the world have been challenged to serve 100 million people in the run up to the centenary, divided into four main threads,

Sharing the Vision

Sharing the Vision

Ever since Helen Keller challenged Lions to be Knights of the Blind in 1925, Lions Clubs International has had the prevention and cure of blindness at the core of its service activities. Lions were involved in the development of the white cane and of the use of dogs to help the blind.

Since those early days Lions have helped restore the sight of 100s of millions of people and prevented sight loss for 100s of millions more. Find out more at lionsclubs.org

D is for Diabetes

Return to Index

The International Diabetes Federation estimates that 371 million people worldwide have diabetes, a global epidemic that is expected to affect 552 million by 2030.

Diabetes and Sight Loss

People with diabetes are at risk of losing sight due to diabetic retinopathy. It is the leading cause of vision loss in adults of working age (20 to 65 years) in industrialized countries. 74% of people who have diabetes for 10 years or more will develop some form of diabetic retinopathy. All people with diabetes-both Type 1 and Type 2–are at risk. That’s why everyone with diabetes should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.

Lions and Diabetes Awareness

With these statistics and concerns in mind, Lions can get involved with the Diabetes Awareness and Action Program. Our work supports diabetes awareness, education, control, prevention and research. A screening test can detect the possibility of diabetes. Lions often arrange for diabetes screenings in their communities.

184,000 projects | 6.3+ million service hours

17.5+ million served

Literacy — the ability to read and write — is the foundation for education and social development.  Yet, hundreds of millions of adults lack minimum literacy skills and millions of school-aged children are not attending school to obtain them.

The Reading Action Program is a 10-year commitment to increasing reading and literacy rates. It’s a call to action for every Lions club around the world to organize service projects and activities that underscore the importance of reading and address specific needs related to illiteracy within their own community.

W is for Water

Return to Index

Water = Life

Clean drinking water reduces disease and helps prevent blindness.

Lions are involved in a number of projects around the world to provide clean drinking water to millions of people.

For example the Lions of the UK midlands helped build 10 wells in Niger and then refurbish them 10 years later. They have also provided 5 water pumps to Nepal with further pumps on the way.

Water is particularly important after a disaster. When the recent Typhoon hit the Philippines the Lions of the British Isles and Ireland were able to provide 1,100+ Lifesaver water bottles (enough to provide clean drinking water for 10,000 people for a year). The response so far to the more recent earthquake in Nepal has been enough lifesaver jerry cans and water purification tablets to provide 13,000,000 litres of clean water.

M is for Members

membersAnd there are now 1.4 million of us in 210 countries.

Lions Club members are women and men who want to serve their communities and have fun doing it. Members pay a modest annual subscription (varies from club to club but is usually less than £2 per week) which pays for all the administration costs of an international association of 46,000+ clubs. This ensures that every penny (or cent) raised from the public is used to provide humanitarian and community service.

Being a member of a Lions Club provides opportunities to grow your leadership and personal interaction skills and provides you instantly with 1.4 million friends around the world. Lions do great service and there’s a lot of satisfaction to be had from being part of it.

It’s great to be a lion so why not join now. Contact your local Lions club and change your life (and the lives of millions more)
